Heritage description, quoted as it is
낮은 언덕 위에 자리한 성당으로, 벽돌과 목재를 이용한 우리나라에서는 보기드문 건축 양식을 보여준다. 정면의 종탑이 쌍탑으로 되어있는 것이 특징인 이 성당은 3개의 출입구와 창들이 모두 무지개 모양을 이루고 있다. 외벽은 붉은 벽돌로, 창둘레와 종탑의 각 모서리는 회색벽돌로 쌓았다. 창 아래와 종탑의 각각 면에는 회색벽돌로 마름모형의 장식을 하였다. 1929년에 새로 지은 건물로, 100여 년 이상의 역사를 간직하고 있으며, 교회가 박해를 받을 때에는 순교의 장소가 되기도 한 한국 천주교회의 발상지적 역할을 담당하였던 곳이다.
